Do not let machines compete your work

What I listened to / read

it is a relaxing day. I searched for some clips to listen in TED.com while I was sipping hot chocolate. my eyes were then stared at the clip titled "The jobs we'll lost to machines-and the ones we won't" by Anthony Goldbloom.  I thought that it is very interesting and can make us realized that we are not only fighting for maintaining our works from other candidates or competitors, but we also have a risk to lose the job to artificial intelligence.
__________________________________________

What it says

Anthony firstly introduced his niece "Yahli" and also talk about her family's life. he then told that there are a research on future of works at Oxford University in 2013. they claimed that 50% of work have a risked being automated by machines. Anthony said that the implication of machine participation in our works had been developed from 1990s as the tool for easy but high-volume tasks such as sorting the mail by reading the zip code. it were then developed for more and complicated jobs. those workers responsible for that jobs are facing with losing their jobs  However, Anthony said that artificial intelligence have a limitation on tracking novel situation which is the advantage of  human on the works. Hence he tried to encourage to challenge with anything we do in everyone before the machine beat you out of your works.
_____________________________________________

My response

Once the clip finished, I come back to think that every second is passed, machine learning are more and more improving itself for more complicated works. But, what are we doing right now? someone still live in very funny, lazy way. we do not know that the possibility of losing your jobs by automates is coming closer and closer. some of example using machine for the tasks appeared on my mind that more than the half of products we use in daily life came from the ability of machine in almost steps of production. as the point of manufacturers and entrepreneurs, the machine can produce more profit and reduce the cost more than hiring the human since the machine can work on frequent, reducible, reproducible and high-volume tasks in very smarter and smarter way. This idea sounds like a horror movie for all worker since it can let their jobs flown away from their hands easily more than they thought.
However, the automated candidates still have a fundamental limitation that is tracking novel situation ,imagination and inspiration. why do I say that? as Anthony said the machine needs to learn from large volume of past data before it analyses and predicts, but the human does not. we can make the progress on the novel situation using the knowledge and applied it by your experiences and creativity which is lacking in machine to find the new or discover the new thing. so, I want to encourage everyone to challenge yourself everyday , imagine and make in a practical way for self-improvement and prevent machine beating your life.

Off with his hair!

What I read

After the serious topics in the new blogs this morning, I wanted something a bit more fun to finish my coffee with, and the front page of the BBC provided in "Prince William sports shaved head on royal visit"
___________________________________

What it says

The article reports that William has adopted a military-style cropped hair style which makes no effort to hide his growing baldness, about which members of his family, the British royal family, have make jokes in the past.
_____________________________________________

My response

I can really relate to William, who is second in line to the British throne after his father Charles. My own hair started receding in late high school, and by the time I was 30, I had a large bald patch on top just like my father did when he was 30. I guess it's all my father's fault. And like William's family, some of my nearest and dearest, and less close friends, also made jokes about my receding hairline.

I think Williams solution is the right one. I decided around age 30 that it was silly to try and pretend that I had a full head of hair when I obviously do not, so I've been cropping or shaving ever since.

I strongly recommend this hairstyle. It is very low maintenance,  requiring a simple touch up a couple of times a week that can easily be done at home. It saves a fortune on shampoo that need never be bought, and there is never any danger of the wind messing up your hair. A bonus with ageing is that it doesn't so readily reveal the fact that the colour has now changed from "a sable silvered" to a silver sabled. (Sorry for the last bit – the temptation to copy Shakespeare's antique English was irresistible. If you can't guess the meaning, Google the bit I copied in "quotation marks".)

Why I took my wife's last name ?

What I read

After fighting with my quizzes at my school, I had my spare time for doing my homework from AUA. I started to find the video that I'm interested, but I can't, so I changed to open BBC news and findind the article that I satisfied to. Then I got it ! It's said "Why I took my wife's last name ?" in the stories section. This interested me because this is such a strange story for me. I have never seen married men use their wife's last name.
_____________________________________________

What it says

Rory, a primary school teacher, changed his last name from Mr Cook to Mr Dearlove. It caused some confusion to his student because they always see a few female teachers change thier last names when they got married - but never a man. There are many discussions about his decision. Some people say that it's kind of weird, however, some people say that he's a modern man. He answered the questions about his decision that changing his surname to Dearlove wasn't difficult and he wasn't massively attached to the name Cook and it doesn't any difference to him for his work.
_____________________________________________

My response

Is it wired to changed your surname to your wife's surname, if you were men ? Many people think this is kind of strange, but in my opinion he is such a cool guy, because there are few married men decide to change their last name, however he is not scared to his decision and being brave for changing.

In Thailand, the wives basically change their last name to husband's last name, but some married women decide to use their owns. I have never seen the married men change theirs before, but I think there is a few men did it.

From my point of view, I think that the guys who change their last name are having their own reasons and it doesn't make something getting worse. So, if they feel comfortable to do it, then do it.

Is social media making us any happier?

What I read

When I had finished my busy works,I spent a lot of time for reading a journal on BBC Future called #LikeMinded by Sophia Smith Galer. As you can see in http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20180105-likeminded-a-new-series-on-social-media-and-mental-health.In this academic work states a strong issue that individual should rethink about using social media. Also,I would like to ask readers that "Is it making us any happier?".

What it says

The journal outlines that  social media effected on human's psychological health. This is because people can simply retrieve to each other's problems or negative circumstances around the world from social medias. Also, individuals can usually show a lifestyle on its which would be envied by any others.Additionally, there is an untimely research indicates that social media usage is related with  symptoms of depression, anxiety and loneliness in some people. Moreover,in this season there are many investigations about the impacts of social media on mental health. And,many journals had written for leading readers to rethink about how to use appropriately social media.

My response

Although, social medias create many advantages for my academic works, there are disadvantages for my mental health. This is because when I spent a lot of time for accessing social media connecting,I felt anxious, jealous, and bad emotions.

Firstly,I felt anxious when reading Thailand politics news in social medias. For instant,as I trust in democratic system,so I do distrust the Thai military government. Also,I always so felt stress when I have known that the current government had punished the students who are the political activists.I think that the government is destroying the fundamental of individual rights.I believe that  citizens should have the right to choose own government and the right to have free speech. From this result, knowing political news in social connection brings anxious mind to me.

Secondly,I felt a twinge of envy for the people on social medias. Someday I had many trouble from poverty or disheartening. And I accessed social medias. I had seen several people's happiness.I felt jealous them. This is because I also wanted to be happy too.Reality, accessing social medias may lead people to compare their life with others.Sometimes, when they have seen another's well-being life, they may be jealous in their mind. Thus, social medias cause jealous mind that makes an immoral personality.

Lastly, social medias relate to unfavorable emotions.Obviously,I easily enter social medias in smartphone around 2-4 hours all days.Sometimes, I had known all negative emotions from others which they had posted on social medias. So, It might harm my good emotion and bring a lot of ้hatred to my mind. For example I always felt angry when someone posted a discriminated speech on Facebook. Thus, social medias make me hurtful mind.

In conclusion,I present three wickedness of using social medias which can cause my mental health.Importantly, I will manage my times to appropriately access social medias in order to cure my mental health.

Keep your goals to yourself

What I listened to
Listening to native speaker is difficult for me. Therefore,I choose to write about something I listen to on this blog since I want to practice and improve my listening skill. Yesterday, I listened many interesting video clips on www. ted.com but I think the most interesting video clip is Keep your goals to yourselfby Derek Sivers .  I interested in this title because I believe everyone has goals in life and want to achieve their goals. So, everyone in class willl get some good ideas from this talk show.
What it says
On this talk show, Derek Sivers  suggest us that we should keep our goals to ourselves and explain us why our goals are less to happen when we telling someone. Moreover, he also shows us an interesting experiment about this topic.
My response
It is my belief that everyone in the World has their goals and try to achieve them . I have a lot of  goals in my life for example, be healthier, successful in my career and travel around the world with my family. From the TED talk I have listened, the speaker said that we should not tell our goals to anyone .There have been both pros and cons about keeping your goals to yourself.
There are many reasons for the idea of keeping your goals to yourself. To begin with, the people who keep their goals to themselves will not get criticism from other people if they can’t reach their goals. Another reason is that if we don’t tell our goals to everyone ,there are no expectations from the others which can make us stress and anxious. Finally, when we don’t tell them to others , it makes us think its not already done so, we will have more motivation to do the work. This is look like what Derek Sivers  said.
However, some people argue against the idea of keeping your goals to yourself. Firstly, when we tell our goals to someone ,it motivates us to keep our word. Secondly, if you tell your goals to the expert , they may give you some good advices that make you success and achieve your goals.
Having considered all of the above facts , I am in favor of the idea of keeping your goals to yourself as it can cause more advantages than disadvantages. Do you agree or disagree with this topic?

Should Schoolchildren Have Jobs

What I listened to / read

After the class, I try to make a blog myself, and it is nice that no problem with it. So, I saw a news report about: 'Should Schoolchildren Have Jobs'. So, I plan to share it with the other classmates who who interested in this type of topic.
___________________________________________

What I read

In the clip, it says about the types of jobs that schoolchildren have during their school years. In the clip, it also gives an information about what is a Saturday job. A Saturday job is the name we give to part time work that teenagers do for extra money. These jobs often take place on Saturdays but not always. There are also some interviews from British Children about their Saturday jobs. The statistic results also indicate that teenagers are also facing pressure because their school work is heavy, and they would like to concentrate on their school work more. But for the other students, they think it is an opportunity for them to gain some social experience.

__________________________________________

What I response

As an international college student, I love part time jobs. Last year, I worked in Thaifex. It is an international trade convention center and people from different countries have their food exhibitions there. So, I had a chance to meet people from almost 70 countries. Unfortunately, I had Korean class at that time, so I skipped the class and did the part-time in Thaifex. During that time, I've learned a lot about doing business. The area I work on was guest lounge and hosted buyer. I observed how they conducted their business negotiations and how they introduced their products.

Nowadays, there are more and more companies are opening internationally, and they are seeking more opportunities to introduce their products to the world. As a college student, I would suggest you to work as a part time if you are not so busy with your school work. Of course, I shouldn't have shipped the Korean class. To be honest, it's quite hard for me to follow the Korean class because I skipped the class for a week. Therefore, there are advantages and disadvantages of doing part time job.We should make a plan first. Or else, we would have problems with our schools work. Only in this way, can we benefit from doing part time job.

English as she is spoken

What I listened to

I thought that this very short TED Talk, "3 ways to speak English", was fun. In the embedded video, I've turned on English subtitles because she is speaking in poetry, and the language is difficult. In fact, you might like to change to the subtitles to Thai the second time you listen. (Try it in English first.)
___________________________________________

What it says

The speaker, Jamila Lyiscott, mixes up three versions of English commonly used in the United States to show how flexible English is. The three different versions of English she uses in this piece of poetry are the ones she speaks: at home with her family, on the street with friends, and in class at university.

___________________________________________

My response

This is the first time I've embedded a TED Talk in a blog post. It wasn't as hard as I had thought it might be. The "Share" button on the TED Talk automatically creates the code to add to the blog. The messy bit is that you have to use the buttons at the top right to switch from "Compose" to "HTML" mode to paste the code into the right place in your post, and then switch back to "Compose" mode to see that it looks OK and continue writing. If it had got all messed up, I would have deleted and tried again. If you "get" 50% of her talk without using Thai subtitles, I think you're doing very well.

I enjoyed Jamila's passionate poem, but the language really is difficult, so if you have trouble following it all, don't worry. I almost decided against using her talk, but she also makes an important point about languages: there is no single correct version. What is correct is always what a group of users actually do. And this is a good thing. It means languages can freely evolve, and different groups, such as young people or academics, can make their own version to use. I see the same in Facebook, where some of my Thai friends write Thai in a way that would not be OK in a classroom, but which is perfectly correct, and definitely appropriate, for Facebook. And when I'm back in Australia, I sometimes have to ask my young nieces and nephews to explain what they've said: that's how different their version of English is from any that I use.

And the title? That's an example of how my Italian ancestors used to speak the English.

How many versions of Thai (or your native language) do you use? How different are the various versions of your first language?

Designed super-baby or Unpredictable monster

What I listened to / read

During a little free time before I took a shower, I had searched for the trend of science and medicine news. I found one topic that are very interested and can changed the belief of destiny that you ever known. I would like to share this new "Gene editing-and what it really means to rewrite the code of life" written by Ian Sample from The Guardian.
___________________________________________

What it says

Recently, scientists found the way to eliminate the birth defects or genetic disorders both of embryonic and adult stages, and prevent the defective gene transmission. this method could help millions of children from the genetic disorders such as cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia and muscular dystrophy. it had been also used as a tool for overcoming cancer and HIV infection. Interestingly, this strategy could be used to design what your baby could be. It did not only have an advantage for medicine purpose, but it also important for agriculture. By doing this, it made the crop could be grown faster, safer and more precise in crop feature more than a conventional genetic modification. this method are called "Crispr-Cas9". this method used a  guild DNA to find the specific region on genome before used the enzyme to cut the specific sequences before repairing with the desired piece of DNA. this method seemed to be great way to cure the disease permanently, but there were some issues that researchers need to solve before using as a clinical procedure.

My response

After I have read it, I thought that this scientific story passed a lot of errors and trials, collected the experiences of many expertise, but it still keeps on a long journey. In my point, as a scientist, Crispr-Cas9 technique is more than an usual way for us to find the role and interaction of specific gene. it is an exceptional tool to access to the secret of nature to control and design your life at the cellular and molecular level. this controller can cure the genetic disorders and birth defects that the recent treatment can only repress the symptom or reduce disease progression rate. it can improve the life quality of patients. apart from the advantage on disease, gene editing can be used as a designer material for design the baby to be smarter, healthier, or even genius. As parent view, those features is what parent want to find within their baby. hence, this method seems to rise a hope for them. However, there are some questions that appear on my mind. how can we confirm that the edition is not off-target? How we can make sure whether the genetic modification is on the right time and right place? How can we know that the baby will born without undesired  severe diseases or awful features? and if the gene editing goes wrong, what does the baby confront to the social issues?

these questions are a challenge for all human. they need to try to discover and take a lot of experiments before they turn into the clinical trails and commercialization. For parents, they need to understand the way that gene editing materials do and the risk that you will get. they also need to prepare after designing your baby. if the super-baby is borne that is a lucky, but if he/she born as unpredictable monster, they need to prepare and make sure that this baby can live in the society happily and he/she does not make the unpredictable events.

Air pollution in London

What I read

I have been interested in environmental issues in the world for many years but this may be the first time to know that air pollution is a big ploblem in London.

For me, China and India could be very famous for air pollution. I could know there are lots of concerns about air pollution in London.

___________________________________________

What it says

London’s air quality is within its legal limits for the first time in mid-January for ten years. However, unfortunately, it bleached the limits for nitrogen dioxide(NO2) by 6 January.
It is said in the article that conventional cars are to blame on this air pollution, so some regulations would be introduced in some areas by the mayor to improve the air quality. And another problem is PM2.5, which may increase the likelihood of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The air campaigner said The Mayor has introduced several good initiatives but much more needs to be done.
___________________________________________

My response

European countries are much more concerned about the environmental issues than other countries, such as global warming. So it was in Paris that new international agreement against global warming could be achieved.

I was surprised that London had air pollution. I think in Europe, air pollution is not a current but a past problem. Nowadays, some European countries have made a goal for banning the production gasoline engine cars in the next few decades. I think that policy reflects the concern about environment. Of course it is important to value the environmental protection, but economic growth is also important especially in developing countries. Environmental protection is sometimes affecting negative impact on economic growth. So the balanced policies on environmental protection and economic growth are needed to the world economies.

The styles and fashion trends set to dominate in 2018

What I read

While I was searching for an interesting topic on BBC News, I found "The styles and fashion trends set to dominate in 2018" . I think It is very interesting because nowadays the high fashion trends go fast and far as we may not catch up with! So I decided to share this topic with my teacher and my classmates.

___________________________________________

What it says

In this article, there are many high fashion looks that top fashion designers are likely to set the tone for 2018 for both men and women which is always from the seeds of mainstream trends. For example, All clear, New denim, All the trimmings, Trench kiss, Ethical fashion, Get shorty, Outsized, Great outdoors, One for all._______________________________________

My response

I have known myself that I have been interested in fashion design since there were homecoming parties which we have made every year. Thus, we had to search for the clothing design which we impressed and see a lot of high fashion newfangled styles and glamour coutures which can't take our eyes off due to its attractiveness and perhaps unexpected eccentricity.

I have an idea to further my study in fashion design in France for a Master's degree because I think that I would love to design costumes, bags or any clothing things. But I don't expect that I have to do this in my main career as I don't want to convert my favourite things into my boring things.

Anyway, this article makes me learn and enjoy new high fashion styles in 2018 and I hope my teacher and my classmates will get more knowledge and be enjoy too!

Is coconut oil a superfood?

What I  read

Today I read news from BBC news about Is coconut oil a superfood? I choosed this topic because I think we might focus on advantage or disadvantage of coconut oil not point.
___________________________________________

What it says

Some people thought coconut oil it is superfood. But after cholesterol checked. The results might change mind because it have cholesterol more than 2x of Butter. So I not good idea for use to cook for people having congenital disease like diabetes or heart disease.
___________________________________________

My response

People in the past used coconut oil for heat or light for midnight in generation did not have electricity.
No have evidence them use coconut for cook. Because palm oil is popular untill now. Now goballization is changing we have electricity or etc. So coconut oil use for spa or mix with cosmetic more than use to cook. One think that supporting coconut oil in Thai massage like to use it for scrub skin because have moisturizer more than any oils and ofcouse very aromatic and feel relaxing more than use to cook.

Social media beats ignorance

What I read

I thought I should write one more example of a response to something I read or listened to, and over the last couple of days, several BBC News stories have caught my eye. I decided over this morning's coffee that "Sora Aoi: Japan's porn star who taught a Chinese generation about sex" by Fan Wang was the winner.
___________________________________________

What it says

In his article, Fan Wang tells us how the political tensions between Japan and China have been helped by a Japanese pornography star who has been wildly popular in China since the rise of the Internet when she was making her sex films from 2003 until retiring in 2011. When their schools and parents failed to teach them about it, millions of her Chinese fans learned about sex from Sora Aoi's films, and they appreciate her efforts to learn Chinese culture, especially the Chinese language. They were thrilled when she announced her engagement on New Year's day.
___________________________________________

My response

Even after I had read this article a couple of times, it was difficult to write a short summary, and I'm still not 100% happy with the one I've written, but I can write more in my response here.

As I read the story, there were many aspects that interested me. First, I was impressed at how smoothly Sora Aoi moved from porn films to a more mainstream film and singing career. But I also like that she says that she was never ashamed of her job in pornography, which is illegal in China as it is in many other countries. Of course, being illegal does not mean it is not also wildly popular, as her millions of Chinese fans prove. I can't think of any good reason why pornography should be illegal, and as the article tells us, it is one way to learn about sex when parents and teachers do not do their job. Most pornography is legal in Japan, and that country has one of the lowest rates of sex crimes in the world, which makes sense because if people are at home watching sex films, they are not out committing rape or other crimes.  Those sorts of violent crimes are also low in the Nordic countries where pornography is legal. Perhaps counties that accept the reality of human interest in sex have better adjusted citizens who are less likely to commit violent crimes of all sorts.

I also like the connection the article makes between the rise of the Internet for sharing and cultural sharing. Another example of this might be the popularity these days of K-pop in Thailand, which can act as a cultural bridge, along with Samsung smartphones. Of course, the Internet and social media can also spread hate and lies, but I think that the positives easily outweigh the negatives, and the less government interference there is the better: censorship is always because someone does not someone else to know something. In the case of pornography, its because repressive politicians, and perhaps misguided parents, don't want young people to learn about sex, but ignorance usually leads to problems, never to wisdom.

Adoption is a secret?

What I read

From reading the article about world war II , I questioned about people or citizen who were in that time and have been affected. Then I tried to go on the internet  for more information and I found an interesting story named " The mystery of the baby in the box".

___________________________________________

What it says

Peter Robin King , 74 years old man , was abandoned in a box on street when he was 10 years old and adopted by the Kings . Peter and his daughter tracked down about her father's past for reuniting the families and solving the mysteries. However the traces show Peter's ancestors and siblings , he was upset and doubt why  his biological parent decided to leave him.
___________________________________________

My response

I believe everyone deserves to know who they really are and how we can identify ourselves. Some people answered me the heredity , nation or tribe. There is no an exact answer and this might be a reason why Peter Robin spent many years discovered his biological parent. So, how does the adopted child feel to discover that adults who have raised you is not his real parent ? and is it good to tell your adopted child that they are adopted?

Many couples who are unable to have children usually adopt a kid from orphanage hesitate to tell "Where are they from". Often parents who are reluctant to tell their youngster about the adoption because they might feel ashamed or inadequate that they could not have children of their own. Moreover, the child may be sad or angry.

For me , adoption should not be a secret . It is good to know where you from for benefits in medical issues and it's help to build a strong bond of trust between parent and child. The adopted child may be upset at first but it's a natural reaction. It's better to create positive images of adoption
and show them that this is your family and always will be.

Racist advertisement

What I read

I have never know how to make a blog so this is a new thing for me. After class, I read H&M stores in South Africa trashed by protesters after 'racist' ad from the guardian. I think it is interesting because the situation like this heppens again and again like they never learn from the past.
___________________________________________

What it says

The angry protesters trashed H&M stores in Johannesburg, South Africa. After the H&M company's website posted a photo of a black boy wearing a green hoodie with the message "coolest monkey in the jungle" on his chest.
___________________________________________

My response

So many times we heard about protesters agaist the big company because of racist advertisement and this time it happens with H&M in South Africa. The meaning of word "monkey"  in Thai is playful or energetic but around the world it is not good meaning.  Back in the history, "monkey" used to call black people who were sold to be slaves. The masters treated them with disrespect and without human rights that made a  big wound in social until now.
I think this advertisement was a mistake by production team because they did not concern about sensitive content like this. So sad, many people thought a racist word is a joke but they never known how much the victims suffer from their behavior and how they get through.
By the way, I do not agree with what the protesters did. You can tell the world what you were displeased but you must not respond with violence. It will not make anything better and you have to get the result in anyway. What should we do? We should care people around us at least show small kindnesses without bias no matter what they are and where they are from.

The Smallest Cat

What I listened to

After the class, I try to to make a blog myself, and it is nice that no problem with it. So, when I saw a story about Smallest cat in world: Footage of rare animal, I plan to share it with other classmates who interested in an cute animal, such as cats, like me.
___________________________________________

What it says

In the clip, it says about the smallest cat in the world, Rusty spotted cat, that looks like a kitten in almost fully grown. It only lives in India and Sri Lanka. It weighs about just one kilogram, so people can hold it in one hand.
___________________________________________

My response

I love cute animals, and when I was ten I have two kittens named Dorame and Pun. After I had read this story, it made me miss my two cute kittens because we have stayed together for one month. At that time, I lost my kittens because I have a cat allergy, and I was really sad to hear from my father that I could not live with them again. So when I saw a video about the cat that always look like a kitten, I fall in love with it.

Rusty spotted cat is such a rare cat that you can find it just in India and Sri Lanka. It is pretty small and cute, and that is why I love it. Because some normal cats look nice when they was young, but after they grow up they are not as cute as kittens, many people do not like them any more, and they are going to be stray cats which make a lot of problems.

It is true that cats are one of animals that I love, and I will never hate it. Although I love wild cats like Rusty spotted cat or lion or any kind of cats, I really hope that I will not meet them in any situations.

Knitting not knots

What I listened to

When I was a child, around ten, I was fascinated by knitting, so when I saw the talk "How yarn bombing grew into a worldwide movement", it interested me. It's an unusual way to use knitting and crocheting.
___________________________________________

What it says

In this TED Talk, Magda Sayeg tells us how she became an artist almost by accident as a result of knitting a door handle cover, then covers for street sign posts and eventually a bus and even larger things. Today, this "yarn bombing" has become an international phenomena, adding touches of warmth to dreary urban landscapes.
___________________________________________

My response

I really like Sayeg's description near the end where she describes knitting and crocheting as "granny hobbies". When I learned to knit and crochet, it was from my grannies and ageing aunts. In fact, it was pretty weird for a young boy to have such interests – we were supposed to play rough, do wood work, ride motor bikes and so on. I did also enjoy making things with wood and riding motor bikes dangerously, but knitting and other "women's" crafts also interested me. I almost never made anything practical, but I just loved the way a long piece of wool could be turned into something soft and pretty.

My family, especially my father, was very supportive of this rather strange hobby for a young boy, and I don't remember any of my mates at school being unpleasant about it, even when I developed a bit to the stage of crocheting lace borders for hankies. Maybe I liked it because it was something that I created, and that was satisfying, even if I didn't have the patience to knit a whole sweater.

What the speaker does not tell us is whether she creates her art by hand knitting or by machine. I hope by hand. It sort of seems a bit like cheating to use industrial-type machines to do it.

It is decades now since I've knitted anything. Maybe it would be good to get physically creative again.

Addicted to interference

Don't stink up my home!

What I read

Back home after class, my computer seems to be working fine, so I decided it would be a good idea to post at least one more example of blog post, this time practising reading and writing. In the Health section of the BBC News, I found "Most people who try one cigarette become daily smokers, study says", which interested me because I have mixed opinions about smoking, both personally and for others.

The main idea of the article is that smoking even one cigarette correlates with most people becoming addicted daily cigarettes smokers. The experts think this is a good reason to strengthen government controls to make it harder to sell cigarettes.

My response

I am certain that smoking cigarettes is unhealthy. It also smells awful. However, smoking is also a pleasure for smokers, which is why they do it. My own personal experience is not exactly the same as that reported, but I'm sure the statistics are correct: if people try smoking even once, they are likely to continue and become addicts, which means they might suffer the serious health problems that come with smoking, such as deadly lung cancer.

But I don't agree with the proposed solutions. In a free society that respects people, you can't use the law to make bad, even stupid, decisions crimes. This is what the drug laws of many countries do, and it only wastes vast financial and human resources, but fails to stop drug use. Thailand is an obvious example. Yaa baa is illegal, but that has not reduced the use of this very popular drug, The law has, however, greatly increased corruption and made the drug problems worse, especially for young people, who are likely to also get criminal records in addition to drug problems. Another good example is when the United States made alcohol illegal between 1920 and 1933. This was great for the mafia and corrupt police. It was a disaster for society.

I think people should be educated about cigarettes, and they should be banned on publicly owned property such as streets and government hospitals, but that's all. I ban cigarettes in my home, but if people want to risk their lives in their own homes, that is their business and the law should not stop it.

Peter's interests

I'm interested in food, among other things. When I was very young, perhaps ten or twelve, I was keen to start cooking, and at that age, I really wanted to cook cakes, biscuits and other sweets. Boring things like real meals were not so exciting. As I got older, I continued learning to cook, and happily my mother was very indulgent. She did not like cooking, so she happy for her children to learn to cook at an early age. Some of my aunts were great cooks, and they taught my brothers, sisters and me a lot.

After I left home for university, I ceased cooking. And these days I hardly ever cook. It is very easy to walk out and buy great food in Bangkok. There is, for example, a delicious kai yang and somtam stall in the market next to my condo, and lots of restaurants within a few minutes walk of my home.

My most long term interest is reading. I have read a lot since early primary school. Before I finished primary school, I had read everything in the small library in my country school. At high school in the nearby large city, the library had a lot more, and there was also an excellent public library in the town. These days, I still read for hours every day, but most of it is done on a screen - my computer, tablets or even my phone sometimes.

What do I read? I read history, novels, news, philosophy, economics and rubbish. Silly stuff like Dan Brown novels is great fo relaxing, but then there are also the joys of HOmer, Plato and modern philosophers.

Tasty questions

It doesn't look like a human in pain

What I read

As I enjoyed my morning coffee, I browsed the BBC News as usual. There wasn't much that interested me since the front page was full of the same recent stories such as the US presidents filthy mouth, and even the Tech section, which I always look at, didn't have anything very exciting. But then I found the article "What's the kindest way to kill a lobster?" in the Science section. This interested me because I do enjoy lobster, and I also worry about some of the moral implications of our eating habits.
___________________________________________

What it says

The article says that scientists have come to believe that their efforts to avoid bad experiences suggest that lobsters feel pain at least to some extent, even though they don't behave the same way that mammals and other animals do so that we know that cats, chickens, cows and pigs certainly feel pain when they are hit, starved, cut or otherwise tortured. The article also presents suggested ways to make lobsters unconscious before throwing them alive into a pot of boiling water.

My response

Is racism a bad thing? I mean, is it OK to treat someone badly because, for example, they have black skin? How about sexism? Is it OK to say that women can't be engineers, can't drive cars and can't study English because they are ... women? I hope we agree that the answers to all of these questions is no. But then, why would it be OK to cause suffering to animals just to give humans a tasty mouthful of food? If we have to give a morally strong, relevant reason reason for treating women differently to men, for example, that women are more likely to be trusted by rape victims than men, so should be employed over men as police officers dealing with rape victims. I tried to think of a good example where skin colour, that marker of race, might be a justified reason for discriminating, but I couldn't think of one. Perhaps you can help me in a comment?

My point is that human beings seem to be prejudiced in favour of our own species in the same way that man were traditionally prejudiced against women and that white people, or whatever group had power in society, were traditionally prejudiced against people of other colours. Why, after all, would it be morally acceptable to kill and eat pigs but not people? The answer here cannot be "because humans are humans and pigs are pigs." That would like saying it's OK to treat women like silly toys owned by men because "women are women," which is no reason at all.

So, should I be enjoying lobster? And steak? And ham? And lamb?

I think the answer is that it's OK to eat meat because it's not the killing that is wrong, but the causing of pain. But I'm still worried. Since a new born baby is about as intelligent as a baby pig, and they are about equal in feeling pain, is there a good reason to treat them differently? Is there some reason I haven't thought of that justifies treating human animals differently to other animals when it comes to killing and causing pain?
